By Isidor Straus
I bought this filter for a pond that I estimate at about 750 gallons. It is in partial sunlight, has about 2/3 plant coverage this time of year, and a few dozen small goldfish (not koi). Before this, I'd had a small (9 watt) ultraviolet clarifier and a Tetra pressure filter that was starting to get worn out.I've had the filter running for about 3 weeks. Here's my comments:1) Water is a lot clearer, but it's not crystal clear. More like a clear brownish tea. I can see down about 12 to 15 inches.2) It's a gravity filter. Be sure you don't run too much water through it or it will overflow. I thought that a 4000 gallon capacity filter would just clean my relatively small pond right out. The small print says that it has a maximum flow capacity of 1400 gph. I had to use both ports with 1 1/4" pipe to avoid overflow with my 1200 gph pump. I doubt that the pump is at full capacity because some of the hoses are a bit flattened.3) The surface area of the internal foams isn't large at all. I have an intake prefilter on my pump which clogs up about every fifth day. After about four of those cleanings, it is also time to clean the filters inside of the 4000 G-UV filter. Without a prefilter, you'd be cleaning this thing every week. But, it's got a 24 watt ultraviolet filter; it provides some aeration as it burps through the water, there's no gaskets that are tricky to reinstall or replace like on a pressure filter, and it does do the job. I believe that it will probably be a long-lived product if I do the required maintenance of filter cleaning and annual UV bulb replacement.
